Archives: The Perception Project

I had Trayvon Martin in mind for this project. Would he have been killed if his appearance had been different? Would he have been killed if he were white? Black men are often judged by the color of their skin, rather than the content of their character. I want to challenge people's perception by displaying black male subjects in two different ways. The first look is straightforward. I wonder what the observer thinks? Are they frightened? Intimidated? Why? The second look captures the subject in their element; who they really are. I want to know if the observers opinion changes once the subject invites them into their world. The last image allows the observer to decide.
